20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Book Report

lesson 15 english.

The book 20,000 leagues under the sea, was written in 1869, and published in 1870.

The book was written by jules verne, who was a prolific french novelist who is known for writing,

Around the World in Eighty Days, and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Before i give you my opinion on the book i will give you a quick summary

In 1886 dr. Aronnax receives a letter of invitation to go on a hunt a large whale or “sea monster” that was destroying ships, he decides to accept and bring his assistant conseil along with him. After a while of searching and with no luck, they decide to cancel the mission. During a storm the “sea monster” attacks their ship. During the attack, Aronnax gets thrown overboard along with Ned, and his assistant conseil. They discover the “sea monster” was an underwater submarine called Nautilus submarine. Aronnax, Ned land, and conseil get captured by the submarine’s captain, Captain Nemo. They were held captive for 10 months as they Adventured, explored and traveled to different places.

Conseil is known as dr. aronnax “trusty and loyal assistant.” conseil has proved his loyalty throughout the book several times. An example of this is when Aronnax fell overboard conseil jumped in after him in an attempt to save him, proving his loyalty. For this reason I have grown to like conseil for his loyalty to aronnax.

Dr. Aronnax is the Narrator of the book, and the main character, he enjoys the sea, and the creatures within it. So he ends up enjoying the adventures in the Nautilus.

Captain Nemo secludes himself from civilization, to spend his life traveling the seven seas.

He is very unpredictable and has many sides to him. He ends up not sharing much about his past until he warms up to them.He later reveals that he is a trained engineer, and would sometimes reveal tragic events that happened earlier in his life.

I enjoyed the adventures, and the thrills of the book. The author did a good job with setting up tension. For example My favorite part of the book is where they were stuck in an iceberg and to escape they had to chip away at the iceberg with pickaxes. After a few days the air supply starts running low and since they are stuck they are unable to refill their air supply. In the final few seconds they are able to return above water.

What I didn’t like about the book was that I thought they would spend more time talking about the creatures, what they discovered, and learning about them. Otherwise I enjoyed the book very much and would definitely read it again. Overall i would give the book i 4.5 star rating
